Victoria to Nanaimo, 06.15

Long day of sailing, Victoria to Nanaimo.

Hard winds last night forced us to stay in Victoria several hours longer than we had hoped. We could have left late at night, but it would have meant finding an anchor spot in the dark. So we decided to stay a little longer. But, docking fees in Victoria’s harbor are exorbitant, and we were already one night in, so we snuck off slipped our moorings at 4:30 this morning! Wheeee!

Night shot of the Parliament:

Goodbye Victoria!

We went up through the San Juan Islands and into the Strait of Georgia, where we caught a glimpse of Mount Olympus’s snow caps:

Mid-afternoon, to our surprise, we found a US military vessel and two Canadian ones hot on our tails!

We worried that they had been sent by the Victoria harbor, but then we determined they were probably just escorting us through the strait to ensure us a pleasant trip.

Finally, we pulled into Nanaimo Harbour early evening. This harbor has docks you can tie up on, but it also has a large open area, where boats just anchor in the water. That’s where we settled in for the night. When we want to go to shore, we take the dinghy and tie up on a dock, and Lungta stays at anchor. There are also water taxis that go between the anchorage area and the docks. And we have a pirate ship for a neighbor!
