Allison Harbor to Namu, 06.27

We travelled for a long time today, about 8 hours.

I spotted my first sea otter! They swim around on their backs, eating clams off their chests, cute as can be!

And not too long after that we saw a couple of whales sounding—either gray whales or humpbacks, couldn’t tell which.

Finally, around 8:30, we pulled into Namu. Our directions say there’s a harbor there with a cannery, but as we got closer all we could see were deserted buildings, a big rusting boat, and houses with windows out and holes in the ceilings.

We dinghied over to go explore and were surprised to find a new-looking dock behind the older buildings, a fire going in a barbecue hut, and people hanging out! They were a group of 6 or 7 kayakers that were camping there for the night. But, there are actually three people who live there year-round, taking care of the place and managing the moorage facilities. The woman we met showed us around her greenhouse—she has peach trees! And she told us how to get “uptown”: everything up a little ramp is uptown, and everything on our side of it is downtown.

That’s the view of downtown from uptown. The building on the left is the greenhouse.

We wandered around the old cannery for a while, admiring the flowers she had planted all over it and the redwood forest right just past:

These are lupine flowers (and a foxglove), and she’s planted them everywhere!

And when we got back to the dock we were treated to this spectacular sunset:

(This picture was taken around 10:30, btw, maybe a little later.)

Strange place—she says they get 2000 people in over a summer, May to October, but then it’s quiet all winter long. Strange life.
